The Hidden Dragon

A mahjong table laid out with tiles in green and gold racks, pink cocktails, a gold vase of peonies and a bowl of blossoms, in front of a dark green wall painted with a gold Chinese dragon

Beyond the basics.

Ready to take your Mahjong skills to the next level? Whether you're looking to sharpen your strategy, make smarter decisions, or feel more confident at the table, advanced Mahjong lessons are designed to help you become a stronger, more strategic player.

These sessions go beyond the basics and focus on the strategy, decision-making, and competitive skills that can make all the difference in your game.

What you'll sharpen

Three ways the game gets deeper.

Every session in The Hidden Dragon is built around the players at the table. Sandra watches how you play and works on exactly where your game can grow.

Skill 01

Strategy

Reading the wall, building toward the winning hand, and knowing when to change course. Learn to plan several draws ahead instead of one.

Think ahead
Skill 02

Defense

Protecting a hand that is not going to win, reading discards for danger, and playing it safe without giving the table away.

Play it smart
Skill 03

Table awareness

Reading your opponents, setting the pace of play, and carrying yourself with the calm of an experienced player.

Good to know first

Before you book.

These sessions move at the pace of a real game, so a little preparation makes the difference. Here is where we suggest your game stands, and what to bring with you.

Before you book

Where your game should stand

  • You can build a wall and set up a hand without thinking about it.
  • You have played a full game, or several, and can follow a hand to the end.
  • You know the basic winning shapes and can call your own tiles without help.
  • You do not need to have won yet — knowing the rules cold is the whole requirement.
On the day

What to bring

  • Your Mahjong League Card if you have one — graduates of The Opening Wall come straight to this table.
  • Your own set if you have one. Otherwise Sandra brings tiles, racks, and a felt.
  • A note of where your game stands, and the one habit you would like to break.
  • Nothing else. Come as you are — the table does the rest.

Not quite there yet? Guided Open Play is the bridge — a real game with a guide at your shoulder, and a Mahjong League Card once you have finished The Opening Wall.

The finer points

The company of better players.

The Hidden Dragon is also about the table itself — the etiquette, the scoring, and the quiet confidence of playing among people who take the game seriously. Sessions can prepare you for friendly competition, a tournament with friends, or simply the satisfaction of a well-played hand.

Scoring and counting with confidence, so the end of every hand is quick and clean.

Table etiquette that makes you a player others are glad to sit down with.

Warm-up for tournaments and competitive gatherings run by Sandra.

Pace and poise — keeping your composure when the game tightens up.

Sessions are arranged directly with Sandra — reach out and tell her where your game stands and where you'd like it to go.
